Freight TrainFreight on Rail's aim is to get goods off roads and onto our railways as an important step in developing a more sustainable distribution system.

Freight on Rail is a partnership between the rail trade unions, the Rail Freight Group, Network Rail, Campaign for Better Transport and the rail freight operating companies. Freight on Rail works to promote the economic, social and environmental benefits of rail freight both nationally and locally. It advocates policy changes that support the shift to rail and provides information and help on freight related issues.

An average freight train can remove 50-60 HGVs from our roadsFreight on Rail is designed to help local and regional authorities, through all the stages of the modal shift to rail such as planning a rail-freight strategy, accessing grants, understanding technical issues and obstacles and engaging with terminal operators, local business and the logistics industry.

The site acts as a portal to our members' and relevant industry sites with industry news, views, clarification on new legislation and technical data such as detailed site information, path gauges and routes from Network Rail and the rail freight operators to existing and potential freight interchange locations and grant applications from the SRA. All this information helps to identify freight traffic which could be transferred to rail. In cases of local opposition to terminals and activity, Freight on Rail can help inform the debate and replace ill-founded perceptions with reality.
