Government A14 Challenge study proposals. 15th June 2012 Responding to the publication of the Government's initial study and response into the A14 Challenge, Philippa Edmunds, Freight on Rail Manger said: "We warmly welcome the Government's recognition of rail freight's role in
reducing road congestion on the A14 corridor and keeping the green economy
moving. These proposed capacity upgrades would not only reduce congestion
within the port of Felixstowe, but also long-distance traffic along the
A14 making all modes more reliable, which is what the customer wants. We
know targeted investment in rail freight works. The upgrades at
Southampton Port saw rail's share of the surface transport market increase
from 29 to 36 per cent within a year. We urge the Government to give the
go-ahead for these enhancements so that 40 million long distance lorry
miles can be removed from the corridor every year." Notes to Editors 1. Department for Transport A14 Challenge study and response 2.
